The Marmore Falls is one of the most famous waterfalls in Italy . It is located in the Valnerina , a short distance from the city of Terni , in the wonderful Natural Park of the Marmore Falls . If you pass near Terni, the waterfall is one of the obligatory places to visit: its beauty has fascinated poets and writers over the centuries, and continues to fascinate thousands of tourists who decide to visit it every year.
The Marmore Falls is considered one of the highest in Europe : the overall difference in height between the top and the base is 165 metres , divided into three jumps which give it its current spectacular appearance. The waterfall is formed by the Velino river, which flows into the Nera river from the nearby Piediluco lake. The name Marmore derives from the peculiar calcium carbonate salts that settle on the mountain rocks, whose reflection of the sunlight makes them resemble white marble crystals. Marmore is also the name of the nearby medieval town, one of the most beautiful villages in the Valnerina together with Piediluco and Arrone.
It is good to pay attention to the visiting times of the waterfall, in fact it is not always possible to see it in its full form, given that the waters of the waterfall are used for the production of hydroelectric energy . The release of the water is checked regularly, and it only takes a few minutes for the flow rate to reach its maximum.
The waterfall has not always had this appearance: over the years many engineering interventions have been necessary to tame the flow of the Velino.
